Interview Q&A
How long have you been in business?
We've owned the 1896 House Restaurant since 1995, and re-invented it it into the '6 House Pub in 2004. We have owned the 1896 House Inn since 1985, or 27 years.
What is your primary product or service?
Serving wonderful meals to our local clientele and Inn guests. We pride ourselves on offering a wide variety of the best quality foods, prepared with care, at a reasonable price. We hire naturally nice, friendly staff so our guests will have service with a smile.
How did you first become interested in your line of business? (if owner) - What is your background? (If owner or store manager)
Well, that's a long story. My previous company was going belly up, so I had to find another career. We first wanted an Inn, but ended up with a motel. We had no intention of owning a restaurant, but because of noise issues coming from the restaurant before we acquired it, when the restaurant came up on the auction block, we bought it for protection. Because of zoning laws, there was almost nothing we could do with the building but a restaurant, so we had no recourse. I had been an international airline stewardess, and my business partner taught high school biology & chemistry. Having done what I did for 16 years, I knew I wanted nothing to do with food, but here I am! LOL!
How do you differentiate yourself from other businesses in your category and area?
Well, we are lucky that there are not too many American Pubs in the area! There are many ethnic restaurants, so that is an automatic differentiation. The 1896 House building has a natural coziness with low ceilings, wooden walls and floors, and a round wooden bar. We have tried to lend sophisticated comfort to our dining rooms using antiques, Oriental carpeting, & wing chairs. We have created a menu that suits everyone, as our Inn guests sometimes just want something light, and our weekend crowds prefer a nice dinner and a fun night out. So our menu is extensive. Our food portions are generous as are our libation pours. We also offer our "Whacky Weekday" specials that really are a deal for the diner.
How many locations do you have and do you have plans to expand?
Only one restaurant, 2 motels, and a bed and breakfast. We have no plans to expand.
Provide detailed directions to your location
We are easy to find. 2 miles south of the center of Williamstown on Route 7.
What type of payments do you accept?
Cash and all major credit cards
Which areas do you service?
Because we are an Inn as well, we provide service to guests from all over the world. Our local clientele come from all areas of the Berkshires, Southern Vermont, and towns east of Albany.
Who owns your company or runs daily operations?
My business partner and myself.
What are your hours of operation?
Winter schedule is 5 PM to 9:30 weekdays, and 5 PM to 10 PM Fridays and Saturdays for dining.
Summer schedule is 11:30-9:30 Weekdays and 11:30 AM - 10 PM Fridays & Saturdays
The bar stays open until the last person leaves.
What is the best compliment anyone can give you?
This is by far the toughest question! LOL! I get this so often, so I suppose when a guest says "This place has a woman's touch! You've thought of everything!"
What is your favorite quote or Bible verse?
"Be still and know that I am God"
